Synthetic Turf International Creates Backyard Version
Augusta National’s 12th Hole—A World Famous Par-3
A Birthday Gift to Remember—Valencia, California
December 15, 2005, Jupiter, FL—Synthetic Turf International (STI), a global synthetic turf supplier and installer of premium synthetic putting greens and related synthetic surfaces, recently completed a signature putting green, designed to resemble Augusta National Golf Club’s legendary 12th hole—Golden Bell. The project was completed in conjunction with Pioneer Golf of Thousand Oaks, California. With 14 year’s experience as a Class “A” PGA Golf Professional, Pioneer Golf’s President, Keith Thykeson, understands the game of golf. Five years ago he partnered with Corey Aurand to form Pioneer. Today, Thykeson still serves as a teaching professional and instructor at El Caballero Country Club located in Tarzana, California.
The idea for this one of a kind project was the result of Valencia, California, resident Karen Campbell’s desire to make her husband’s birthday this year “absolutely extraordinary.” With a home on the 18th hole of a golf course, Campbell only had to peer out her window for inspiration. A few years back, Karen’s husband, Terry, had the once in a lifetime opportunity to play a round of golf at the Augusta National Golf Club. After hearing the story of his round at Augusta over and over, Karen thought it would be a great gift to erect something that would take Terry back to that wonderful memory. Her idea was to recreate the famed 12th hole at Augusta in her backyard.
Utilizing a premium synthetic turf, STI replicated the green with its exclusive NP 50 nylon turf. The 700 square foot putting surface even encompasses Augusta’s Rae’s Creek, with a two foot wide stream constructed adjacent to a natural rock walkway bridge. Just like the 12th at Augusta, the bridge provides access to the green. STI’s SoftLawn®™ Zoysia turf is situated around the stream and putting green creating a lush, naturalistic border. The final landscaping of the project included the planting of one hundred deciduous azaleas.
Commenting on the project, STI President William Campbell states, “It’s great being involved in a creative project like this. A grass putting green requires daily maintenance. STI’s synthetic surfaces look, feel and play like natural grass. The difference being, our synthetic grasses are virtually maintenance free. I’m delighted that we were able to turn Karen’s vision into a reality. What a thoughtful, creative and unusual gift. For STI, we always welcome an opportunity to go beyond even our own expectations. This project represented one of those rare opportunities.”
