Synthetic Turf International Completes Athletic Field Makeover
St. Bonaventure University Updates Baseball Complex
St. Bonaventure, New York
August 21, 2006, Jupiter, FL—Synthetic Turf International (“STI”), a global synthetic turf supplier and installer of premium synthetic surfaces, recently facilitated renovation of Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field at St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, New York. This is the first university athletic field completed by Synthetic Turf International’s Design/Build Team. The Team combines STI’s knowledgeable staff, Canton, Georgia-based, athletic field contractor FIELDS and field designer Steve Peeler, Grounds Manager for major league baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates. The combined core excellence of these well-respected and highly renowned synthetic turf professionals brings greater efficiency and effectiveness. The group serves a diverse client base including high school, collegiate and professional athletic programs.
The Team worked closely with Dr. Ron Zwierlein, St. Bonaventure’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Bonnie’s Coach Larry Sudbrook. The field renovation began at the close of St. Bonaventure’s 2006 baseball season. Sod was removed in May and installation preparations begun. Performed by FIELDS, field preparation included drainage, laser grading, aggregate placement and grading, installation of a wash-down system and installation of the STI’s synthetic turf product, Sports Turf XP. Sport Turf XP replicates natural grass in its aesthetics and playability. Another distinct advantage is its ability to drain faster than a natural grass field, resulting in fewer game delays and cancellations.
“We were immediately made aware of the University’s budget for this project,” states FIELDS President Brian Storm. “The Team worked hard to develop creative design ideas and creative means of construction to deliver a state-of-the-art baseball facility. It’s more than just a field. We’ve created a recruiting tool. The greatest benefit lies in the Bonnie’s ability to play on their home field earlier in the season. New York’s long winters posed a problem for the Bonnie’s home game schedule. Now they’re on par with the southern schools.”
Additional renovations to the ballpark include new construction of dugouts, bullpens, perimeter fencing and the expansion of the home plate backstop. Thomas Marra, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and former Bonnie baseball player, donated to the Anniversary Campaign for St. Bonaventure which made the new baseball facility a reality.
